New MAC computer advice sought for graphic design
03/19/10 at 16:02:31

Hello All,

I'm new to this forum, and am looking forward to actively participating.

As well, I'd like to solicit some thoughts on new hardware. I do graphic design work -- mostly print -- and am coming to terms that my G4 Sawtooth tower is starting to enter end-of-life (even after replacing the hard drive twice, graphics card, adding more memory -- over the years).

I'm looking to invest in a new system (hardware and software), and would like to know if I can get away with a souped-up iMac, or should I be looking at a Mac Pro tower? Which one(s), and what kind of configuration(s)?

Following is typical software currently used:

Currently using Adobe CS 2 -- heavy use (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Acrobat)
Some Dreamweaver, NO Flash application work
Adobe Lightroom
MS Office 2008 for Mac (really sucks; will look into iWork)

I'd be using new system for lots of print work (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator)
Lots of photographic work (Photoshop and Lightroom) - both analog/scanned and digital.
Minor Web work (Dreamweaver; No Flash application work)
Home office (banking, correspondence, etc.)
Maybe some home digital video

I'd like to know your experiences. Your counsel is greatly appreciated.

Best,

Andrew
